That last one had been long, a novelette verging on novella territory. It made me wonder if Barlow could have segued into novels at some point and really made a name for himself in the literary world.
If heâd only had the chance.
If heâd only given himself the chance.
This made me wonder something else, a plan beginning to form in my mind. Could I pull it off? Not alone, I would need an accomplice.
I would need Belindaâs cooperation.
THE CULT OF WRATH
Review of Gutted by Jeremiah Wrath posted on the Horror Lovers online journalâ¦
I know Wrath has long since been a favorite of the horror fanboys, the next Stephen King and Clive Barker all rolled up into one if you are to believe the hype.
Which I donât.
I know this is going to be a controversial statement, but I find Wrath totally overrated. His first novel, the vampire apocalypse tale The Creeping Dark, had its charm, I will admit. The writing might have been a little unpolished and the characters a tad flat, but the book had a nice atmosphere that promised better things ahead. A promise never fulfilled. The succession of novels that followed were an exercise in the law of diminishing returns.
After his debut, Wrath jettisoned the atmosphere, the one thing that really worked for him, and instead turned to extreme violence and sexual perversion which have become his trademark. Now Iâm not a prude when it comes to my horror. I donât mind gore and depravity, but I do need more than that. I need story and character and a little finesse. Wrath provides none of these. Itâs like he throws in as much twisted violence as he can to distract from the fact that there isnât really any story there.
Gutted, his latest from Tombstone Press, is the worst offender of all. If the book has any kind of cohesive plot, I canât find it. The story, as far as I can tell, is about a nameless guy that travels the country in an RV, finding people at campgrounds and gutting them. Why? We never know. We never know anything about this guy, and we never know anything about his victims. The book is literally nothing but a string of disembowelments and ends abruptly with the guy getting pulled over for a broken taillight. Does this mean he gets caught? No idea, the last line is, âHe turned off the engine and waited for the cop to come up to his window.â I donât feel the need to warn of spoiler alerts, because that isnât really much of an ending. Which matches the novelâs lack of a beginning or middle.
As expected, the Wrath fanboys are already all over social media singing the praises of Gutted. I saw one guy actually call it the Gone with the Wind of horror, whatever that is supposed to mean. Other than a faint whiff of racism, I donât see the similarities.
I know art is subjective and all that, but these Wrath fans seem to have blinders on.
